What This Bill Does
This resolution (1) condemns the assassination of Charles "Charlie" James Kirk and all forms of political violence; and (2) honors the life, leadership, and legacy of Charlie Kirk.
By voting for this resolution today, we are making a strong statement on behalf of the Congress. We are telling our constituents, for one thing, that political violence, but also the glorification and celebration of that violence, are profoundly wrong, and it goes against everything we stand for as Americans.
This resolution is so important to remember that legacy. It is important to remember that this was a young man. He was still a young man, but even younger at 18, he was a young student with an idea. He said that what is happening in the schools is wrong. What needs to be taught is something broader.
This resolution officially honors Charlie Kirk's commitment to the constitutional principles of civil discussion and debate between all people of the United States, regardless of political affiliation.
First, he promised that the next rule resolution would reduce the extension of this authority from 6 months to 4 months, expiring on January 31 rather than March 31. The gentleman says that is not soon enough. Some of us would agree. This resolution fulfills that promise.
Charlie was a man of God. He was a loving husband and a father and an unrelenting advocate for the Constitution, for American free speech, and for his Christian belief.
As I heard the horrific news of the assassination of Charlie Kirk, I was on my way to speak to a group of pastors who had come here to tour the Capitol and take in our beloved National Capital.
Today, Mr. Speaker, I rise with a heavy heart. We should not have to debate this legislation this evening. This legislation is the result of a horrific decision to assassinate a man of faith, a husband, a father, and a friend, Charlie Kirk.
It has truly been a troubling week. This has been a very tough time for all of us, especially for Erika Kirk, Charlie's children, and the family at Turning Point USA.
America has hit a moral crossroad. One side celebrates the wicked murder of a faithful patriot, while the other side recognizes the sanctity of life and the beauty of thinking and speaking freely.
Charlie Kirk stood for the open exchange of ideas, our God-given freedoms, and spirited debate that challenged people to view the issues of the day in a different light. He reminded us to remain rooted in our faith and to seek God's wisdom every day.
I was inadvertently detained in a meeting with constituents and missed the vote on H. Res. 719, of which I was a cosponsor. Had I been present, I would have voted YEA on Roll Call No. 282.
I think most Republicans in Congress were too scared of Trump to actually stand up and fight to protect everyday consumers. Then yesterday, Republicans barely passed a rule that blocked votes on all of Trump's illegal tariffs until March 31, 2026.
I rise in opposition to the previous question, which includes a detrimental and damaging provision that abdicates, that gives up, and that capitulates Congress' constitutional authority over this administration's disastrous tariff policy.
I rise today to speak on the principles that bind us together as a nation. First and foremost, we must acknowledge the human cost of this horrific tragedy. A wife has lost her husband, children have lost their father, and a family has been shattered by senseless violence.
I rise today to unequivocally condemn the act of political violence that ended the life of Charlie Kirk. Violence has no place in our democracy, and no American, regardless of political beliefs, should ever be the target of an assassination.
